who we are
Groove at Creation Station Studio City is a unique enrichment school with movement-based programs for children starting at 18 months old. All of our classes reflect our strong commitment to promoting high self-esteem in our children and creating a safe and healthy environment for all to flourish and learn. Groove classes have been designed to fit the developmental and emotional stages that are appropriate for each age group. At Groove, we believe in teaching the whole child and giving them instruction that appeals to all types of learning. Dance is at the core of our curriculum, but the skills learned here in the studio should carry our students beyond dance and into the real world.
What sets this studio apart from others are the owners, Amy & David Kriegel, a husband and wife team who have been married for 26 years and truly have a hands-on approach to what they teach and are experts in the field. We welcome you to look around our site, come visit the studio or give us a call!
the owners
Amy & David Kriegel have been married for 26 wonderful years and have been truly madly deeply in love for 30. They met the old fashioned way, in a bar called Ports, while Amy was finishing up her undergrad degree in performing arts at USC and David was a successful working actor hailing from Julliard. They have 4 children, yes you read that right, 4 totally awesome kids! Olivia is 23 and just completed graduate school for Accounting. The twins Ella and Sophia are rising college sophomores, studying performing arts and creative writing, respectively. Last but certainly not least, Hudson is a rising 5th grade baller and pretty psyched to have the house to himself now that all his older sisters are away at school!
our story
Amy began working with children while still in high school and ran the childcare programs at several fitness studios in Dallas where she grew up. While Amy was in college getting a bachelor of performing arts at USC, she taught classes at MY GYM on La Cienega and led their pre-school alternative program. By now, Amy knew she wanted to pursue a career in teaching, and she started to incorporate music and movement into her program at MY GYM. During this time, she met David who was living in West Hollywood and really diving into his acting career. They shacked up and she went back to school at USC to pursue her graduate degree in child development and education with a teaching credential in California while David continued to slay the acting game.
Amy and David were married and loving life in sunny LA. Amy was finishing up her last year at grad school and upon graduation, they discovered Amy was pregnant with their first child! The timing worked in their favor and Amy was able to start teaching dance and music in private schools and then running a dance program at MY GYM. She was excelling at figuring out motherhood and working with kids and fine tuning what worked and what didn’t. A rising star in the under 4 set. A few years in, another pregnancy, this time it was twins! At this point Amy knew that if she wanted to be a hands-on mom and be able to teach and do what she loved; she would need to start her own business. Honestly she just wanted to control all the children of Los Angeles. Coincidentally, a little studio called Creation Station where Amy would attend Mommy & Me classes with her oldest daughter was selling the space and looking for a franchise buyer. After a few negotiations and Amy wanting the space on her own and not as a franchise, the deal was signed, and Groove at Creation Station Studio City was born.
As Amy & David continued to expand their family and their business, David decided to help out at the studio and step in as manager. The idea was for David to temporarily run the studio while Amy was on maternity leave with their 4th child and then go back to acting when she returned. Well, as it turns out, David brought a fresh pair of creative eyes to the studio and loved being able to help share this vision with Amy. This short-term solution ended up being a long-term investment into a business they both love and share together every day. David brought an entirely different performance side into the studio with his Julliard training and acting background that was the perfect pairing with Amy’s dance and childhood education background. This was just the beginning for this extraordinary duo who grew their studio almost as fast as their kids. Together, they are experts in their field and one of the best husband and wife teams in the Valley!
faqs
how young can we start?
We suggest holding off until they are solid walkers, usually around 18 months.
are we too late to start?
Of course not! Many dancers do not start until they are well into their teens.
how intensive should the program be?
can boys do this too?
All children love to move and can benefit from a dance class, there are no gender restrictions in dance! Many a football player found grace on the field through a ballet class.
what style of dance is best for my child?
Groove believes that you have to learn to walk before you can run, therefore, ballet is the best place to start. Once there is a strong foundation in ballet the sky is the limit as far as styles go – check out Latin, Ballroom, World, Modern or anything in between.
