JUST SAYIN
(Thoughts about dance, family, parenting or whatever else is on our mind.)
Why should my child take dance? I mean, they love the glitter and stamps at the end but is that worth it?  Dance provides so much more for children than the actual learning of steps. The lessons can sometimes be hidden in the routines of the class. A dancer is entering the room in tears because they are afraid to be without their parent is met with a smile and a hug from another child who welcomes them into the stretch circle – empathy. Dancers are given scarves to work on a skill, one dancer wanted green but got red – flexibility. All dancers must wait and watch their friend take a turn to show a series of steps – support and patience. There are countless benefits to dance that will affect the child far beyond the classroom. So as you are smiling at your dancer while watching through the window, wondering are they even learning anything – the answer is a resounding YES! Often the lessons are less obvious but more impactful!

TEACHER FEATURE

The amazing Miss Kelly, often referred to as the baby whisperer, is a cherished member of our staff. You may have to wait a few months to be in her class however, as she has her first baby on the way – literally any day now!
She has been singing and dancing since she was in pigtails. After touring the SoCal scene with acclaimed revue groups such as the Allard Singers and the Young Americans, as well as performing at several regional theaters, Kelly attended the University of Southern California where she graduated with a BA in Theatre and a minor in Musical Theater. She also danced with Paragon All-Stars, professional competitive dance team, and helped them take home a national victory at National Dance Alliance and COA Dance West Coast competitions. She then left the West Coast for New York City, where she studied acting with Mary Boyer at MTB Studios; and had a taste of performing in off-Broadway productions; and danced with Enfocus Dance Company. She also dabbled in film and voice overs. She is now back on the West Coast and continues to perform onstage, on film and in the recording studio. Most importantly she has assured us that once she is feeling up to it she will be back to teaching. Happy healthy delivery! We can’t wait to meet your new dancer!

DANCE TERM OF THE WEEK
Come to the desk, tell us the term and show us the move (as best as you can) and you’ll get a treat!

Battement [bat-MAHN]
Means “beating”. There are two types of battements, grands battements and petits battements. It is when a dancer extends his/her leg to the front, back or side.
